Miskin E-14 motor scraper

I was looking on the miskin website and saw they are selling a motor scraper now. While a motor scraper would be like using a post maul to pound finishing nails for my needs, I thought it was kind of interesting that someone would start making motor scrapers again. While I don't think that Cat has anything to worry about when it comes to market share, competition can't hurt, or are these even a competitive machine? Does anyone have any experience with them? Are they actually built by miskin or are they re-marketing someone else's? Information is kind of scarce on them. Heres a link to there site.

Got a job for 150 or so hrs scraper time. Won't need the scraper after this for a year or more. I'm 99% Dozer man. What's my best option? It's sandy soil and just leveling and a couple of levees 5' tall. 300 to 600' haul.

Does anyone have experience with Cat 623B scrapers? I was thinking about buying one but I've had no experience with elevating motor scrapers. Any reasons not to own one or reasons they are good? Do they all have "cushion hitches"? Do the engines have the power pull loading heavy clay? What is the most common break/ wear parts? thanks for any help..

Cat 60 scraper????

Hi all. Been looking at upgrading our scraper and have come across a cat60 flat bottom. Just wondering if they are as good as I have been told and if my CaseIH 9230 will pull it OK. The tractor has 235 engine hp 177 drawbar hp and 12 speed powershift transmission. I can add about another 1200 lbs of cast weight safely to the tractor to help out with traction. I want to do some ditching and fill some low spots and then haul some fill into my bin yard which will be about a 2 mile trip one way so im wanting to be able to move along at a decent road speed. Eventually I want to find an older Cat challenger to pull the scraper with as I will have a lot of deep ditches to make and clean out so not having duals on the tractor to deal with will be a lot more user friendly and cheaper on tires. Is this a good choice for a scraper or is there a better option out there within the $20,000.00 range?

Thanks.

Hi all,
Wondering how guys find the deere buckets. We run horwood bagshaw laser buckets but was contemplating going to tandem 2112 to help with the bulking for our farming properties. How do they handle polishing work and what are the major problems with used machines. Do they need cushion hitches, was looking at going a 9560R JD with autoload.
Thanks.

Any 639 operators out there?

Hi fellas! I'm over here in the south west of Australia. I own and operate me own 639D scraper. have done for years. I know of all the ones here in west Oz, we still have 4 in the family, the old man has owned 9 of them in his time. As far as I can tell there were only 31 ever built by caterpillar, with 27 of them somehow ending up here in the west. a truly brilliant machine, the most versatile scraper by far. I was just wondering if anyone knows of one still operating outside of Oz?

I have a developing oil leak out the output shaft seal on the old 613's torque converter that I'm gonna have to tackle in the near future, my question is, the output shaft has about 10mm (3/8") end play, is this normal or am I gonna find more wrong than I bargained for? Torque converter seems to be working fine other than the leak, temp is good. Thanks in advance.

I have a Euclid Terex S-18 I am looking to sell. I don't know much about these machines my dad purchased it at an auction years ago, it was drove home from there and has sat here ever since. I am wanting to know if there are collectors that refurbish these machines or anybody that still uses these machines. I have not been able to find much information about them. If some one out there can tell anything about them I would greatly appreciate. My e-mail is slrjoey@xplornet.ca or my phone # is 403-633-4201. :o

862 Deere engine rebuild

$

About my second post here in as many years guys, so bear with me. Have an 862 John Deere which is intermittently losing water into the sump. Once again intermittently blowing steam out the crankcase breather and the occasional hydraulic lockup on starting. Have resolved myself to an engine rebuild suspecting a pin ***** hole in a liner or a sealing ring problem at the bottom of a liner. I may be lucky and find it is only a head gasket but I doubt it! Has anybody else got any bright ideas please? Now my real problem, I can't find an engine serial no. anywhere. There is a block casting number RG243300198 but I have been told the serial no. should have two letters then 6619T as the start of the ID. I have looked behind the fuel filters and everywhere I can think of. Alternatively can anyone help as to what the difference is between these motors as there seems to be 3 or 4 different rebuild kits available depending on this serial no. Heeeeelp please. Very frustrated OZZIE here :)

I work on a ranch in northern California and we are doing a bunch of dirt work. The owner sent up one of his Cat 623B scraper. The question is what is the "trans hold" foot pedal for? And any good advice?

627A scraper troubles

i have a couple 627a twin engine scrapers i just got. all four engines start right up real good. all have 3306 engines. the problem is when the fronts are under load they smoke [black] like banshees and dont put out. i did oil change and primary fuel filters to no avail. in park they smoke off idle smooth out until 3/4 petal and smoke heavy black. i checked the screw in sediment bowl screens one had shavings in it. the other did not. the one with shavings can hardly pull it self around. but it runs good. these machines sat @ 3 years. Thanks any advice?

Terra-Cobra Scrapers

Any one heard or have a pic of one? Operators called them "The Terrible Cobras" for good reason.
Late 50's on a Sunday I visited a friend of mine in Custer, SD., and he took me to their job north of Custer to show me the scrapers they had to run. They were a different breed to say the least, scraper controls were front right, about head/shoulder high. with a extra palm lever that was for emergency quick drop. He said the only way it would release, was to stand up, rear back and kick it. Steering was by a chain that ran around behind the hitch, very pron to break pretty often he said. One neat idea it had was a big spring inside a large pipe that slid into another with a push block on the back of it, making this one of the first pushing cushions. Bad part, all the springs were broke on them.
I asked him to push me off, and I hauled 3 loads just to say I ran one. They were really poorly maintained and in bad shape, sloppy steering, no brakes, etc. They were the only ones I have ever seen or heard of.??
Later in the week he called and told me the one I run broke a steering chain while hauling down hill and the guy hit a pine tree. National Forest Service charged the contractor $85.00 for the tree.
That DW 21 sure felt like a Caddie Monday morning.

Uranium mining was hot in the 50's & early 60's, made for good winter work when road work froze up, right up to the 3 Mile Island thing.

This was 30 miles from Craig, Colo., contractor was Lakeside of Chicago, running 3 shifts w/ 48 operators right up till the Bonding Co told us where to park em and go home.

Sorry about the quality, 55 year old 8 MM film., hope it's worth viewing.
